ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
LEE
A. IACOCCA
For the past 25 years Lee Iacocca has been a familiar entity
on America's business landscape. From his days at Ford Motor Company where
he introduced the legendary Mustang, to his rescue of Chrysler Corporation
as its Chairman and later to his authorship of two best-selling books,
Lee Iacocca personifies America's "can-do" spirit. And as a
first-generation American, he epitomizes the American dream. It was these
qualities that in 1982 led President Ronald Reagan to appoint him head
of a citizen's group to restore the Statue of Liberty and its companion
monument, Ellis Island.
As chairman of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation,
Inc. - the group responsible for the historic restoration and preservation
of America's most beloved symbol - Iacocca took on the Herculean task
of successfully raising the tens of millions of dollars from private sources
necessary to underwrite the project. And the rest is history. By the time
Lady Liberty was rededicated in 1986, she had undergone a total overhaul
that would ensure she remain forever a symbol of freedom throughout the
world.
Today, Iacocca remains active with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis
Island Foundation, Inc. And while he has retired from the automobile industry
and lives in California, he is involved in a variety of business ventures,
most notably the development and marketing of an electric bicycle.
When approached to collaborate with Peter B. Kaplan on a
book to celebrate the beauty and wonder of the Statue and her historic
restoration, Iacocca didn't hesitate. Leading the national effort to restore
this great symbol remains a project for which he feels understandable
pride - A treasured accomplishment of this consummate businessman.
